How this paycheck calculator works
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus four things: federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage base), and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000). Pre-tax deductions like a traditional 401(k) or HSA lower the income that gets taxed — a 401(k) reduces income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; an HSA reduces all three.
Federal tax is marginal: only the dollars inside each bracket are taxed at that bracket's rate, which is why your effective rate is lower than your top bracket. The breakdown table above shows the split band by band.
Frequently asked questions
Is this my exact paycheck?
It's a close estimate. It uses standard deduction, the 2026 federal and state tables, and the FICA rates. It does not include local city or county income taxes, wage garnishments, employer benefit specifics, or a custom W-4 beyond extra withholding. Your real stub can differ by a small amount per period due to rounding and payroll withholding tables.
Which states are supported?
All 50 states and Washington, D.C. Figures for a handful of states are still being confirmed against the state tax authority — those pages carry a note. Local city and county income taxes are not included.
Does a 401(k) contribution increase my take-home pay?
No — it lowers your taxes but the contribution still leaves your paycheck (into your retirement account), so cash to your bank goes down. Try changing the 401(k) percentage above to see both effects at once.
